September is behind us – it is officially Fall. Montgomery County Master Gardeners are making final preparations for a great plant sale and you don’t want to miss it. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, October 13th and come join the fun!
Fall is the perfect time for planting in our area. The weather will gradually cool down, and as the temperatures drop, plants have a better chance to establish roots before spring arrives. We want you and your garden to be ready. Let’s go over some featured plants for the sale.
If yellow is your color, you can’t go wrong with the Texas Superstar® Gold Star Esperanza. It is a tried-and-true, heat–tolerant Texas native with striking masses of golden yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. It grows well in containers to accent an entry or patio, also stunning in mass plantings.
Another great shrub to add to your landscape in fall is the Pride of Barbados, also a Texas Superstar®. This plant provides a ‘fiesta’ of color and thrives in the heat and dry conditions of Texas summers. This beauty loves full sun and doesn’t need much water. Butterflies and Hummingbirds love the orange and yellow flowers, but deer don’t seem to. We will also have Golden Showers Thryallis, Little Ruby Alternanthera and Moy Grande Hibiscus – all Texas Superstar® plants.
Texas Superstar® plants are a great choice for our area. These plants have been researched and field-tested by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and proven to perform well in tough Texas conditions. That means you have a better chance of success growing these plants. Plus, they are beautiful! We are proud to offer you these selections and hope you will check them out! Finally, don’t forget to shop our fall vegetable and herb selection. Fall and winter just might be the easiest season to grow vegetables and herbs in Texas – and we have everything you need to get started. Vegetables will be plentiful with Cabbage, Kale, Collards, Lettuce and many other choices. Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Thyme and many other herbs will delight your senses, and all grow well in our area.
